i havent owned one but a friend of mine from my local RC club has one and Ive asked him similar stuff.

in terms of gas, the biggest thing is going to be how you drive it. if you are constantly doing hard accelerations your fuel economy will suffer quite a lot. if you keep it calm you can get some ok fuel economy but you still have to remember that its still a 300+ hp performance car. you should expect around 20ish MPGs. if you keep it calm.

on insurance, its bad. its a used german luxury sports car which is going to be expensive.
the performance on them is quite awesome. i got to ride in it and its a really cool car. its nothing too crazy in terms of acceleration but its the balance of acceleration and handling that really impress you.
its a great track car too because of this balance.

i took some track driving lessons and for most of that time the instructor (Brian Stewart - Canadian Formula Ford and Formula Vee champion) used an M3 of that generation. the engine in that M3 is very smooth. it doesnt have any flat spots in its torque curves. this makes it very predictable when you accelerate out of corners. its very easy to get the most speed out of the tires without overdoing it.

now in winter you absolutely NEED winter tires. the car, especially with the SMG is a bit rough to start moving. this, combined with the rear wheel drive and wide tires. these are very prone to sliding on snow.

another thing that I recommend is that you keep a box or 2 of cat litter in the back. this keeps weight on the rear tires making it easier to drive without causing tire spinning.

then, if you get stuck, you can pour some out around the tires to get some traction.

basically, the M3 is what you should expect of any sports car. what makes it unique among other cars of that price range is the balance that it has. it has great handling and a very smooth engine with a very flat torque curve which is great for track driving. same with the SMG gearbox. older automated manuals are very rough at low speeds around town but on the track they are great. they really do let you think more allowing you to better settle the car for cornering on downshifting.
