2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi?

Hi guys, I recently move in a new house and the problem is the internet here is a bit wacky. Usually, the wifi will display as its SSID but sometimes it's replace with something like SSID-5G (when this occurs, the 2.4ghz is not accessible). The 5ghz wifi connection is extremely unstable and therefore I couldn't use it.

I try to fix it by buying a ethernet cable and connect it directly to my laptop. But when ever the 5ghz wifi is proadcasting, the internet is significantly slow down ( not any better than using wifi). I don't know much about all these network settings and problems so hope you guys can help.

Answer:

You should be able to log on to your router and turn off the 5 GHz band leaving the 2.4 GHz band still operating.

As regards the reason for 2.4 GHz not working, this can be caused is there is a rival network from a neighbour operating on the same channel. Try setting the router to use a different 2.4 GHz channel, and try various channels to see if this eliminates the problem. You might not be seeing the interfering WiFi if it is configured not to broadcast the network name.

Finally, if you connect your laptop by Ethernet, disable the wireless adapter in your computer so the operating system is forced to use Ethernet.
