Title: Can my landlords decide they aren't going to fix the central air conditioner?
Can my landlords decide they aren't going to fix the central air conditioner?

We have been renting a house & paying a lot for rent. One of the things we've enjoyed is the central air. We live in Southern California & it didn't used to get hot here, but now it does. Now that the air is no longer working the landlords have told us we could have caused it by not replacing the filters as often as we should have. How do they know this?
Then they said because we rent month to month they are no longer going to cover air conditioning. What can we do? The landlords suggested we pay to have it fixed. This would cost a lot & we shouldn't have to fix it!

You are renting a house. In most cases, in the renting of a house, you (the tenant) would normally be responsible for all maintenance of the house., as oppose to renting an apartment.
In California an air condition is not necessary in order to rent a house. There are no laws in California that require a house or apartment to be air conditioned, by the landlord. This law do exist in Arizona.
Since you are on a month to month tenancy, in most cases your landlord is able to alter or amend any agreement by giving the proper notice to you of the change or amendment. The proper notice is normally 30 days in most states.
If the repair of the air conditioner was originally in your lease agreement, to be repaired by the landlord, it has now be removed as you were given a 30 day notice of this.
You might consider repairing the air condition, using your funds. Once the air condition has been repaired, you might send the repair bill to your landlord for reimbursement. If your landlord refuse to reimburse you, it would be a decision of yours to take your landlord to court and sue them for the reimbursement.
Your lease agreement or understanding of who would be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the house you are renting.would be determined by the judge and a ruling issued.
If the judgement is against you, your landlord would not be required to reimburse you.
If the air conditioner was broken prior to you being notified by your landlord, that you would be required to repair the air conditioner, you might have some legal grounds to base your law suit on.
